June 3d I chanced to find a single Dog violet. (whether V. sylvatica or canina I cannot say)  in flower ─ Pollen seems to swell immensely in water, & thus apparently same size as that which I thought unswollen within anther of small flower: see to this.─ The collecting papillæ probably represented by the papillæ on sides of scales.

Pistil very different straight with papillæ in summit & a rectangular beak ─ In small flower, no papillæ, & whole short & bent like interrogation; with stigmatic orifice

I believe much larger.

[sketches:] common flower small flower

No nectaries to the 2 lower fertile stamens

5 stamens fertile is a distinct character.─
