July 31 64 Leersia oryzoides — The flowers ar perfectly enclosed in sheaths of leaves. one had shed pollen, which had emitted tube & were adhering to many plumrose stigma — Pollen scanty, but not nearly so as in true "imperfect flowers." — I do not believe that glumes were filled with fluid,— but exteriorly only they were very wet — Several young flowers with pollen formed but not shed, certainly were dry within.— (Plants sent me by Mr. Bennett og Rye-gate — —)

Aug 13 I now find that wet in paler appearance owing to much fluid between two coats of glume: but I believe there is a little both anther & without the upper part of glume: but I opened several & found the anther & plumrose stigma surrounded by in [illeg]air — One of the 3 anthers dehisce before the others— Certainly these flowers must always be self-fertilised.—

These plants were kept with water nearly on a level with top of earth in Pots (& one placed in Hot-house) but they did not protrude a single flower.— They produced plenty of seed —
