p 58 — in many flowers the grains emit their tubes, pass they without having come into contact with the stigma — the tube advance horizontally in the air towards the stigma

*(a) Bentham asserts (that      ) though this pollen-tubes are emitted from that with many plants pollen- grains of many flowers, which have not emit their tribe without having come into contact with to stigma, & that may be seen advancing horizontally in through the air towards the stigma.— I have observed the emission of the tubes from grow still without the anther in 3 considerably distinct Orchidean genus, many Aceras Malaxis & Neottia: see the various contrivances by which O. are fertilised
