Phalaris —Rate Movement Degrees of Different Lights
They may be divided roughly into two lots,
at 2ft 4 ft & 8 ft feet clearly bent, & at 12, 16, 20 much less; in 20 only the tips bent & 16 hardly more than tips & that slightly
[insertion:] (But G [George] being doubtful about 8 & 12 is against this classification)
Got the boys to arrange them in order of curvature without knowing which were which
L [Leonard] arranged them quite right, was decided as to 2 ft being more bent than 4 ft & doubtful about 12 ft & 16 ft .— 144 sqr of 12 256 sqr of 16.
Horace arranged them 2 ft, 4 ft, 8 ft 16 ft 12 ft 20 ft
was not very decided about 2 ft & 4 ft
& doubtful about 16 ft, 12 ft & 20 ft
G.D arranged them right
was decided about 2 ft & 4 ft
doubtful about 8 ft & 12 ft
The seedlings at 20 ft were certainly very little affected. No doubt great difference between 2 ft & 20ft — But on the whole considering the ratio at which light decreases, viz square of distance it was surprising that there shd not havebeen a greater difference between 2 ft & 4 ft— the latter receiving only 1/4 of light — or between 8 ft & 12 ft. — the former receiving 1/16' & the 12 ft receiving only 1/36' of light
