Canary Grass

Plants exposed at 9° 20' to S.W window— Day pretty bright, with sun showing rem examined at 4° 35 P.m.

Dec. 19th

Two plants with silver paper caps, covering 2 whole seedlings, almost as much curved to light, as free plants.—)

(3 seedlings with widely conical tin-foil, light caps, with white paper on ground, round bases of seedlings; no' 1 young plant under 1/2 inch high cap cone only .2 deep greatly bent to light. no 2. cap cone .22 deep, plant .7 high quite vertical. no' 3d Cap cone .33 deep, plant .7 high was curved considerably in directly opposite direction to light & all other plants, I do not doubt illuminated by reflexion from  white paper.)

(Useless)

(2 plants with tubular caps, penetrated by pin-holes on side of light; neither of them curved; plants about .7 or .8 high; one cap .25 deep, & the other .2 deep. These 2 exp. may be added to the many cap. experiments.)

(Three seedlings were left pressing about .2 beneath tips against needles from  8° 40 to 5° P.m in darkness— no signs of bending in consequence.— These had narrow slip of blotting-paper dripping with strong syrup placed along one side caused no trace of curvature.)

Light acts through silver Paper.

Widely conical caps
