Phalaris— Caustic to tips.—

Jun 11th 8° a.m 1879. (Cloudy)

10 young seedlings with apices dried with blotting paper & then about I m.m. of apex touched 3 or 4 time with dry Caustic — 2 Pots placed before S.W. Window

Pot I. 4° 30' P.m. all 5 bent, but only minutest point blackened tips ought to be moistened for 1. m.m.— One is only little curved & this is blackened on one side for rather more than 1 m.m.

Pot II. 4° 30' nearly same result— one very tall one 2 very little seedlings hardly at all curved — some of short ones blackened almost 1 mm. pot well covered.—

4°. 40' P.m Lunar caustic for about 2 m.m. having moistened tips much; some old & some new not in Pot II & placed both pots horizontally.—

12th 7° 30' a.m— in Pot II. those which had 2 mm cauterised have straighten themselves & have very slightly curved or hardly at all curved apogeotropically, but then I do not know that they have grown

12th 8° a.m in Pot II 5 fresh seedlings which had become much curved apogeotropically had tips for about 2 m.m moistened & well cauterised & placed before S.W window so that light acted on their slightly convex backs

(for results see over)

[121v]

12th 4° 30' P.m.

(1) curved to light, but then the blackened part consists almost wholly of the escaped young leaf protruding from apex of sheath

(2) remained curved from former apogeotropically & therefore curve opposed to light— Blackened part 5 1/2 mm— Unblackened 5 mm.

(3) Blackened 4 mm— unblackened lower part above ground 10 3/4 mm seedling straight, so apogeotropism probably acted, but not afterwards Heliotropism

(4) Blackened part 5 mm, unblackened 13 mm.— still curved slightly from former apogeotropic

(5) Blackened part 4 mm. — unblackened 11.— seedlings quite straight—

N.B Blackened part in each case shrivelled —

The sole interest of this observation depends on whether growth in lower part. —
