Sept 2d. 1878

Vicia Sativa (vetch) seedlings — Light

Painted upper half of Plumule (Cots. Hypogean) & not leaves of 3 & lower half of other 3 with thick Indian ink. — In blackened box before S.W. window

Painted Useless

Exposed at. — 8°. 50 Examined at 5°. 15

The 3 painted in upper half; 2 as much curved to light as any the 3rd rather more upright— The curvature in all cases being due to the bending of lower part. The apex points to higher point than does apex of unpainted ones; & this is due to upper part being straight, whilst lower alone is curved. The 3 painted in lower half the lower part quite vertical with the upper curved so much that apex points to same point as the unpainted ones. In both cases the painted part is not bent

(5° 20' exposed to apogeotropism 11° a.m.

3d 2 of those with upper half painted are bowed by apogeotropic, but the painted part & basal part straight, the bowing occuring just where painted & unpainted meet. The 3d seedling nearly straight.

Of the 3 with basal half painted, 2 have upper part bowed— the 3d retains old or former curvature of upper part to light— But the basal part of the unpainted seedlings does not bend.

I have no doubt india ink stiffen them
