Aug. 26th 1878

Oat. Seedlings — Light

very dull day

 Painted useless Indian ink

8° 55' 3 Cots. painted Indian ink 1/2 way measured from apex to ground & placed in blackened box before S.W. window, upper part half painted

(1) 4° 45' nearly as much bowed as any— but paint cracked on side of light

(2) 4° 45 straight.

(3) 4° 45' slightly inclined, paint cracked on light side

do. 3. Cots painted do 1/2 way of basal half— placed do.—

(1) 5° P.m. moderately curved to light— — but basal part bare

(2) 5 Pm very slightly curved to light

(3) 5° P.m slightly curved to light— paint cracked & scraped on side of light

Sept 2d. 2 painted upper half & 2 lower half, exposed from 10° 30' to 5° 30', treated as above.— They were not repainted—

(1) upper half considerably curved to light & I can see colour through —

(2) do slightly curved to light & I can see no sufficient cause in cracking of paint

(3) basal half painted quite straight— perhaps a trace of curvature in upper half

(4) lower part straight— upper curved a little to light.—

Aug. 29th 1878

Wheat Wheat seedlings— Light Wheat

These had germinated in dark cupboard & were etiolated.

At 8° a.m 3 seedlings had upper half painted with indian ink & 3 lower half rather below soil. Examined at 5° P.m. Having been placed before S.W. window in blackened box.

(1) upper half— painted, rather a short Half, as much curved to light as any

(2) do. basal & painted upper half curved, but not as much as natural ones; the upper painted portion straight

(3) do. A young & short. spec. slightly curved, nearly as much as most others

(4) (5) & (6) Basal Half painted, seedlings as much or very nearly as much curved as any in Pot.—

These experiments seem to show that whole case an error.

(raised in dark cupboard) Fresh— seedlings, treated like those above

Aug. 30th

(Painted twice very thick paint) exposed about 8° 45' a.m examined 4° 45' P.m

(1) upper half —painted, rather young & short, in evening hardly half painted quite straight

(2) do do very slightly inclined, a rather tall seedling but almost straight— It is the lower part which is a little curved, but when cut off & held up only just perceptible

(3) do. do — all remarks on (2) apply to (3)

(4) do do — inclined to L. but the basal unpainted half, when cut off & held up showed no curvature — I suspect previously inclined, for several were inclined in morning.— A conspicuous difference between 3 first & all others in pot

(5) (6) (7) (8) These 4 with basal half painted were as much inclined to light as any in pot & yet painted twice like above with great care.— The painted basal Halves were curved, as were the upper half of some

This shows that painting lower half does not prevent bowing if upper half left unpainted

These experiments, when painting done with great care show that my view is correct

Painted useless

Aug 30 1878

Barley — seedlings Light— Painted Useless

Painted twice with Indian ink— very thick. — 4 painted upper half, & 4 painted lower half— not actually measured—

(1) Experiments quite failed for those painted in upper half secreted so much water that paint cracked & washed off—

The 4 with basal half painted have not their paint much injured & some of them are as much curved as any; but this plant is not so Heliotropic as Oats or wheat

Sept 3 1878

Oat seedlings Light

in Blackened Box. S.W. window— Bright day

Recorded at 11° 45'

gum 1 1 1 1 + g

Gelatine 2 2

Exposed at 9° 30' examined at 5°

1 seedling with upper half coated with gum; 2d & 3d with gelatine. a 3d ; a 4th with mixed gum & gelatine afterwards: a 5th & 6th with gelati gum over basal half; 7th & 8th with gelatine in upper half— Both gum & gelatine had set into hard transparent crust but this may have occurred late in day; & all these 8 seedlings were as much curved to light as any of the others. Therefore cause cannot be exclusion of air

[21]

Oats Sept. 3 1878

Exposed & treated in same manner. 3 with upper half painted & repainted Indian ink:

(1) perfectly straight

(2) as much curved to light as any, but much of paint washed off by secretion from adjoining plant

(3) nearly as much curved as any & I cd see no cause, though I looked at spe. under microscope.—

Painted useless India ink

(3) painted in lower half with Indian ink, in all 3 lower part nearly straight, upper part considerably curved, but specimen rather too old.

Sept 4' 1878

Oats— seedlings Light & Old Cabbages with Spermaceti white & Black

Spermaceti put on very thick.

Exposed at 9° examined 4° 45. Bright day— dark Box SW. window

(1) tall with white sperm upper half.— nearly as much bent to light

(2) do do. lower half do. do. do

(3) quite short white sperm. Entirely upright!!!! sperm. so thick that I cannot see stem by reflected light— & only dimly by transmitted light.—

(4) do. Black sperm.— do

(5) moderately long basal half Black. sperm. as much bent as any

(6) tall one whole length white sperm. upright

(7) do — —do Black sperm. do

2d set

(8) moderately tall white sperm all coated with white sperm.— quite upright very slightly bowed to L.

(9) rather short moderately tall upper half with white sperm— slightly bowed to L. quite upright

(10) do not very tall rather short one upper half coated white sperm. slight bowed to left

(11) moderately tall rather short upper half with white sperm. do. do

(12) & (13) long & shortest coated all over with black sp. quite upright

(14 & 15) moderately long & short with upper half coated with black slightly bowed to L.

It is demonstrated that white sperm injures plant & prevents bowing.

[Right margin:] White & Black Spermaceti (Useless)

(All in this bundle Painted)

Sept 6th 1878

Oats Light & Geotropism.

Fixed splinters of glass & quill to 10 Cotyledon, but all become bent, as much as others: they seemed, at least several of them, to have become curved, even when attached to glass.!!!

So with several Oats with pot laid on one side the upper & attached part seemed slightly curved.—

Sept 7th Geotropism fixed 5 glass slips to cots. of Phalaris & laid pot horizontally all bent up, do beneath part to which slips, attached; but then upper part of some decidedly curved — Shell-lac. does not hold sufficiently.

Heliotropism; fixed 6 slips of glass to cots. of Phalaris 1 become loose — 3 seedlings decidedly curved to light in part beneath glass; 2 tall ones not so, but then basal parts of several free ones not curved.

These latter pots were put in dark cupboard for 1 1/2 for shell-lac to set before any strain on it.
