Red Cabbage Seedlings— Light Painted

Partially etiolated & pretty Long

Bright sun-shiny day

Painted with very thick Indian ink in morning at 8° 30' & again at 11° 45' exposed in black box before S.W. window.— Exposed 8°. 50, examined 4. 40'

3 with Hycotyls painted upper Half. 2 straight, one with perhaps a trace of flexure, & the 3d a little bent, but this was marked as previously a little bent to light; altogether the 3 make wonderful contrast with all the others.

3 with basal half painted & this part quite vertical, but the upper unpainted half, as much bowed as the unpainted ones.

So result the same as with Phalaris & Avena. (I suspect case will turn out upper part does not bend & so no transmitted effect, but no transmitted effect of this kind from base. In case of Geotropism perhaps base bends first & is prevented by case of Indian ink & then summit cannot bend)

(Both Cots. painted on both surfaces hypocotyl as much bent as in any case.)

(Coted upper & lower half of hypocotyl with very thick gum water; & upper half with thick gelatine; which when examined had set so hard that needle scraped over them; & yet these 3 seedlings as much bent as any.—

(These seedlings were put about 5° P.m 3° in dark with pot upright & now 10°. 30' a.m 4th all have straightened themselves through apogeotropism.

Painted Useless
