Light

Painting & Cutting off useless

Entoca viscida Dec. 30' cut off Cots & 1/2 petioles off 2 plants &

Dec 31. One almost upright but slightly to light the other much bent to light.

exposed to S.W. window & 1 was quite upright & the other slightly bowed to light— Also painted narrow zone beneath cots. of 5 seedlings

Dec 31, (1) slightly away. (2) slightly away (3) slightly towards, (4) slightly away, (5) bent obliquely but more to light than away

(1) (2) (3) vertical (4) perhaps slightly bowed & 5 greatly bowed. Hence it would look as if stimulus were required from Cots & upper part of stem, unless the cutting off Cots. seriously injured plant.

Dec 31 put in dark from 9.50 Am till 3 pm near the paraffin lamp the light coming from the reverse side to what it did yesterday.

(7) & (8) cotyledons cut off close to the young central bud—. Now (3pm) both strongly bent away from light, ie as they were this morning.

(9) & (10) Cotyledons painted black with thick indian ink. Now (9) has its cotyledons looking nearly vertically up instead of at lamp; but there is a very slight bend in upper part of stem towards light: (10) is clearly bent away from light.

(11) (12) (13) (14) painted about .15 broad black band close under joint— Now (11) has cotyledons looking upwards & slightly to light, but; upper part of stem is only slightly bent to light. (12) whole stem* (see next page)

Celery— painted zone .13 deep beneath cots. & seedlings tremendously bowed to light.— They bend close down to ground

Dec 31 cut off cotyledons of one: in dark room before paraffin from 9.50 Am to 3 pm— Much bowed to light. As is the blackened one of yesterday

slightly bent away from light. (13) cotyledons pointing slightly & stem bent slightly towards light. (14) (ditto).

measured Entoca bands on glass, micrometer, they seem well painted

1 = 10/100 / 2 = .12 / 3 = 11 or .12 / 4 = .09, spot .04 unpainted on bent side / 13 = .14 (14) = .13 / 11 = .14 band of 01 unpainted underneath joint
