Earthquake of 1822.

Mr. R. Budge – was writing in his office, had previously never moved from fear, therefore remained stationary. – the plaster began to fall, & put out his candles – he rushed to door way, recollected it was only thin partition, heard house falling down, rushed into street, threw himself down, was surrounded & clasped by all sorts

of people in the agony of fear – it is supposed duration of this first shock was about 10 1/2 minutes; air full of dust, so as to fill the mouth, same cause rendered bright noon light night quite dark: after this first shock people all rushed to the mountains – does not think that there was any particular direction in which the vibration acted on buildings: it is generally believed in this country it came from seaward: by the stopping of Chronometer & all clocks is thought to have been felt 7 or 8 minutes (- change in time no) sooner at Valparaiso, then at St Jago – (? Elevation or distance Mr B?) – Feeling of fear & horror excessive mind passes with rapidity from the conviction that eternity is at hand to the means of escape: insecurity when it will be quite over. (Incident of young man, sleeping in 2 story house with key on table, fell off could not escape, remained in this condition for many hours, before any person would mention direction, some fell inwards, some outwards. – Mr B has seen houses standing near [hills] at beginning of an earthquake rush into centre of crust; when riding a horse, they will not move.
