Bournemouth. Monday 22d Ether (Ether)
9º 55' Exposed active plant to about a dozen drops of sulphuric Ether for 5' put on meat on many glands; Caused no movement, & on 5' two of hairs on 2 leaves began to move: in 12' after meat put on, on one leaf 2 hairs & on another 1 had reached centre. 10º 30' all the many in centre except 1 single hair & that somewhat curved - less affected than by spirits of wine.
Another specn exposed exactly for 5' to 10 drops of sulphuric ether, & then at 10º 48' 49' meat put on 4 sets of tentacles. Five minutes subsequently no trace of movement; in 10' no movement. - // 11º 19' no changes of position 11º 29' no decided movement. –after 40' after 90' 12º 2 together had moved to centre & I think some others had moved somewhat: at 1º all had reached centre 2º 12'

This one must partially, but not wholly by any means resisted action like those few in last experiment, which did not clasp together

A fine plant exposed to 3 drops of Chloroform before 2' began to close rapidly & [insertion:] in same tumbler with spasmodic jerks which I never saw before; in 2 or 3 minutes, after tumbler removed all Hairs had closed in to centre - seemed to have special action of circumferential hairs. I never saw under any circumstances such rapid movements.
[in margin:] 22d. 11º. 10' (Green stick)
Some few tentacles remained upright on almost every leaf & I put on some atom of meat; in about 5' (viz 11º 25') & at 11º 30' some few of them had certainly moved in!!! at 1º all had moved to centre!!
a fine plant exposed to 2 drops of Chloroform in the 12 oz tumbler for 2'; (Anaesth.) two of the leaves had tentacles perpendicular & two other leaves rather more than perpendicular & inclined to centre: atoms of meat put on immediately an upright tentacle at
3º 2' 30" one tentacle began to move in 8' after meat put on movement excessively slow: now in 25' has elapsed now others have moved a bit. - in 30' no action
At 3. 42.30, ie in 40' none.
At 4º 45' all but one had arrived at centre; ie in 1º 45' from time meat put on, which was directly after tumbler taken off
23d. 2º 30 plant recovered.
