Bournemouth. Tuesday 23

Nitric Ether 8 large drops in same tumbler for 5' – in 3º 30' I distinctly saw one or two hairs move inwards; but very few moved at 11º 10' (almost directly taking off tumbler) put on 3 atoms of meat.—; in 18 minutes subsequently no movement. Then ie at 11º 30' gave same plant 10 drops in water & exposed it to this for 16'; no movement of tentacles ensued, not even those with atoms of meat: the atoms of meat keep now 2º 30' in same unmoved position, but the glands look rather dry.

Wednesday 24 8º 30' meat not yet moved in; but plant recovering —

25th 8º 30' one leaf has opened quite uninjured the others all much injured

All these Extracts rendered fluid

Bournemouth Tuesday 23d Poison

Extract of Stramonium fluid on 4 tentacles for 8' caused no movement; atoms of meat acted quickly on all. —

Poison from living adder fang placed 1º 15' on many glands

23d caused in all quick movement

(Red Stick, with chalk on leaves.)

25th 8º 30' tentacles beginning to open uninjured.

Extract of Hemlock fluid 11º 36' left on for 5' or 10', one moved, perhaps accident: meat put on the others had not moved by 1º 30 (i.e 2 hours), but by 2º 30' had moved considerably

[in margin:] (Green Stick.)

Oct 3d put on Hemlock fluid on 5 glands, no movement in 10' ie 3. 10' & then meat put on; two moved immediately; one moved a little & never moved more; & two not at all. Of latter at 3. 48 had moved a little. At 5º all moved in except one, perhaps naturally bad

Friday 26th. Extract of Hemlock again

Put on for 4' to 5' no movement; then meat put on caused some tentacles to move but other did not Left on for 20'; caused no movement & then meat put on several tentacles; & all closed quickly & energetically!!! This shows how many trials must be made—

The tentacles according to age or from action differ in [illeg]

Wednesday 24th Bournemouth

Extract of Digitalis fluid put on 10 tentacles caused all to move as quickly as meat.

Poison from Formica rufa (large woodcut) caused no movement in 10' & then meat put on 3º 10; after 7' or 8' caused no movement. 4º. 45' some have moved a little

[in margin:] Green stick

Concentrated acetic acid caused no movement in 5' or 6'; meat put on at 3º 20' 3º 35' meat not moved. - 4º. 45'; one has moved.

Thursday 25' 10º 12' Carbonic acid, but not pure, for a bubble of air got in; exposed for 1º 5' - no movement; but it seemed when meat put on that tentacles took 3 or 4 minutes to move as much as would have been effected in 1 or 2 minutes. Try again.

Thursday 25. 10º 20' Strong tea on several glands. left on for 10' no movement, but when meat put on, certainly moved rather slower than usual in comparison with other glands; 2 tentacles did not move at all

(B16

Thursday 25th Colchicum, prepared with acetic acid - Never caused movement; generally meat acted afterwards but sometimes not. It certainly appeared that the Colchicum somehow caused movement in the long-headed circumferential glands but never on on others!!! But I am not sure of this: it certainly seemed so

Friday 26th a minute drip of saliva on scalpel applied as with above caused movement at once. This shows that I can try all salts this way

Friday 26' 8º 45'. Oil of Turpentine 12 large drops for 15' (so as to soak all paper on which glass stood, caused no movement - Meat put on at 9º 1'; caused no movement in 30' nor in 45' [several words illeg]

[in margin:] Black Stick

(B17

26 10º 5' put bits of raw meat on pedicels of 3 tentacles & left for half hour no movement; & then slided same bits on the gland in under 1' all 3 in full movement - very good proof of gland being absorbent

Put drop of chloroform on Glands & bases of tentacles no movement

Cutting off heads does not always cause movement & I have occasionally crushed heads & have never seen movement, meat put on crushed heads does not cause movement

(Used)

Friday 26th Sept. 1862 Bournemouth

Put bits of raw meat on back of 2 leaves 9º 45' marked Red & Black - Blue & Black.

Saturday 27th. 9º no sort of effect; I think I must formerly have made some mistake - (Repeated at Down)
