Oct 17 /62/ Gave an oldish plant of Oxalis acetosella 1/2 tea-spoon of Chloroform in bell glass for 1º 17' & then again another dose at 12º 15' for two hours; no effect. Was removed from the Chloroform at 2º 15'.)

(At 2º 17' put plant of Trifolium repens under Chloroform till 3º 27' (ie for 1º 10') On neither plant caused any movement — Are these movements analogous to involuntary movements of animals? At about 5º 15' the Oxalis went to sleep as it had done the previous night before; perhaps not quite so well as a fresh plant: this was about 3 hours after the chloroform. The clover also went to sleep nearly as well as a fresh plant but later at about 6º viz in about 2 1/2 hour after Chloroform

[Left margin:] Do these plants absorb any? I think Mimosa does.

[Right margin:] Now at 8º P.m. Clover splendidly asleep.

[1v]

Oct 19 I see 2 kinds of grass & Ranunculus not injured by dose which has killed clover.

Facts shows that Chloroform was absorbed by Oxalis & Clover & caused no movement of leaves—

Put sol. of Acetate of Morphia on hairs of Dionæa & left for 20', then touched leaf closed.— I suppose does not absorb

Put acetate of Morphia on sleeping leaves of Oxalis & Clover at night; but next morning they awoke all serene
