Leith Hill May 18 1862 Drosera

Catches flies & growing at height acts early in summer

Put particles, very minute of C. of Amm on single glands – causes great secretion, blackens head & soon pedicel, but causes no movement.

[in margin:] This confirmed at Down

An atom dissolved in about a minim of water, & then the atomest drop taken on needle, causes movement in 2 or 3 minutes ― I shd think could not have been 1/50,000 of a grain.

May 20 atoms of Carb. of Soda (common) put on 3 single hairs ― caused copious secretion & plain movement in 1 or 2 minutes shrinks & blacken Head.

(2

May 20 Brown sugar in 10' no movement on 2 Hair, but caused copious secretion nor in half an hour – on [illeg]

do. Nitrate of Potash movement in 2 or 3 + minutes plainly seen on 2 Hairs.

do Chloride of sodium rapid movement on two Hairs in one & 2 minutes

Carbonate of lime. (pure precipitated chalk) no effect in 10'

Sulph. of Magnesia movement in 2' or 3'.

Tartaric acid do 3' or 4

2 atoms of cinder for 10' on same leaf no effect in 20' one of the bits of cinder much moved.

Sulph. of Quinine in 10' caused one hair to move but not 2 others

May 21 Cream of Tartar hardly any effect on 3 Hairs did not cause secretion then tried again Tartaric acid, caused secretion immediately & movement directly.

(3

Leith Hill ― Drosera May 21- 1862

Particle of Citric Acid causes great secretion & rapid movement in 2' or 3'.

Sulph of Potash moderate secretion & rather moderate movement in about 5'.

Sugar no movement, but caused copious secretion. (repeated experiment)

Sulph. of Quinine in 2 out of 3 Hairs decided movement in 4' (repeated experiment)

Carb. of Ammonia in 3 Hairs caused rapid movement - in one none. (repeated experiment)

Therefore secretion cannot be cause of movement
