page

23    6 leaves 1 gr to 10, each leaf having 1/2 m or 1/160 of a grain    glands of all blackened after 31m    (give average of glands-number)

   (1) leaf in 6h. very little inflection —| after only 2O 30' some sub inflection    did not rise

   (2) ―    do some sub-inflection    | do    do.    do.       do

   (3) ―    do only 2 or 3 inflected | do    do (First) do    do

   (4) ―    do . some sub-inflection | do    do    do    do

   (5) pale L.    do    much inflection | do    after 2O much sub-inflection

   6 do. after 5O 30' grt inflection, all except 7 or 8 | after 9minute grt inflection; after 1h. all except 7 or 8

(Hence 1/2 dr. of the sol. of 1 gr. to 10 oz., produced its full effect in 2O or 2O 30' & sometimes quicker, & the effect does not increase after 6 h.— All were affected by moderate sub-inflection, & one greatly, ie all except 6 or 7 tent, & these were effected in 1h.

22    4 old red leaves to 1.2 dr. of sol. of 1 gr to 20 oz, so each leaf got 1/320 of a grain

   (1) leaf glands after 1h in all 4 leaves all glands so dark red, as to be almost blackened    (I might calculate average number of glands & proportion of carbonate )

   (1) after 2h 40' a few t. on pedicel inflected| after 6O 30' all inflection except 1.

   (2)    do    do    |    do    only 1 inflected; say none

   (3)    do    only 3 long-headed |    do    all reexpanded

   (4)    after 20' several inflected; after 2O 30' 30 or 40 T. inflected      do—    only 8 inflected.

These leaves were kept for 24h & all had reexpnded

(Hence only 1 leaf was affected & this strongly only after 6O 20' so doubtful— But blackening of all glands important.

23.    2 leaves both pale & young 1 gr. to 100 oz., each leaf got 1/1600 of a grain — Glands of neither not blackened

   (1) after 5' some inflection, after 47' all except 40 t. inflected after 4h. lamina inflection — after 6O 30; all except 8 inflected    after 24h beginning to reexpand.

   (2) after 14m. all except 9 marginal clearly inflected; after 4O lam, inflected — after 6O 30' all tent. more or less inflected — after 24h. beginning to reexpand much agg.

Hence it is impossible to doubt some effect, owing to young & pale leaves selected, but very odd glands not darkened— makes me doubt.

25    4 leaves 1/2 dr. of 1 gr. to 100 oz. — each leaf got 1/160 of grain (Very hot day )

   (1) (Young & tender leaf ✔ after 1h 6' all but 40 inflected — after 4O 10' all but 28 inflected

   (2) ordinary leaf O after 8h no effect.

   (3)    do    O after 2h 47' only a few on one side — after 4h 10' only 2 inflected slight ring on disc

   (4)    do    ✔ gland after 2O 7' many outer discals & a few few marginal inflected. after 8h all inflected, except 3 or 4 outer rows.

26 (1) very pale leaf, after O 2h discals forming obscure ring — after 8h no more greater effect

   (2)    do    ― O no effect       ― no effect

   (3)    do    after― O 11 tent. inflected —    all but one reexpanded.

   (4) Red leaf — ✔ after 5' some inflection; after 2O 5' half tents inflected — after 4O all but 45 tents inflected — remained in the same state

( Hence, as I remarked at time certainly more action in these 8 leaves than in the corresponding ones in water. Of these 8 leaves 3 were plainly affected after 1h or after 2O 5m.    Add the 2 cases in last page & 4 below, all used 1/2 dr of sol. of 1 gr. to 100 oz. — we all have 5/14 affected.

24    4 leaves 1/2 dr, of 1 gr. to 100, the same as before — (very hot day)

   (1) pale red young leaf O after 8O only ring on disc    ( As nothing said abut glands blackened I do not doubt not blackened, as at base of last page.)

   (2)    old    O ― trace of do

   (3)    old    O ―    do

   (4)    old    O ―    no effect (With these 4. spec. the water spec' more effected)

1600 (x) 160 (=) 256,000 = 1/256,000 of a grain
