June 16 /73/ Down. Marvel of Peru sweet-smelling from Mrs Hooker. — Seedlings raised in frame— Young plant 12 to 18 inches high— stems & upper & lower surface of leaves dusted thickly with minute Diptera & Coleoptera & larvae — Never saw so many caught —

Hairs short, unequal: Consisting of single row of cells, with terminal one enlarged, single single, ie not divided obviate— secreting viscid matter. — Contains fine granlar matter often with a few larger spheres of matter. One Head under insect (but I do not know whether formerly touched) contained large spheres: these undergo incessant changes of form: smaller spheres appear within the larger ones:— small spheres become confluent: bigger ones divide. — But this bit of leaf was in water. The masses are differ from true protoplasm in being is often spherical.

(A bit of leaf after 1˚ 30' in C. of amm. (2 gr to 1 oz) perhaps had brown granular matter in terminal cell more collected towards base, (but not aggregated) & perhaps the lining of protoplasm of all the cells of the pedicel a little separated.)

(2

I looked at several hairs which had caught minute insect F cd not perceive a shade a difference in them from the others which had caught nothing — terminal cell fine granular the pale matter with no spheres. —

Jun 17th The leaf which had been left for 24˚ in the C. of amm. showed no great difference. — the terminal cells on glands, perhaps rather more opake & browner or greener. — no other difference. — (Chlorophyll granules in cells of leaf itself much aggregated)

Infusion of raw meat for 24˚ no effect on glands— but the lining of cells of pedicels seem separated & become central; possibly exosmose as piece of leaf was placed in dense infusion.

Altogether evidence negative. I can see no evidence that the glands are here absorbent. — so I think it was with nicotiana. —

[146v]

Nicotiana tabacum
