Secreting Glands Jan 28 /73/

I was anxious to know as throwing light on origin of glands of Drosera & Dionæa & Drosophyll whether the glands, so often seen on the hairs on the leaves & stems of plants would quickly absorb or allow to pass inwards, solution of C. of ammon & animals nitrogenous fluids, like those of Drosera.

as far This can be judged of changes in the contents of the cells of glands & pedicel — We shall see that this does occur, but I am far from sure after reading parts of Hansteins paper whether the little special masses which appear after C. of Ammon are phosphorus mass of the same nature as the masses in the alb of Dionæa — Their movements are not alike & not nearly so clearly pronounced — (Back)

J. Hanstein. Bot Zeitung 1868 p 745 — speaks of of drops of Balsam in the hairs of Pelargonium.

Speaks of contents of cells as metaplasma —

(These secretions (as Bell suggests) may often be protective)
