June 1.

Saxifraga umbrosa

Frank has seen the slow movements in the purple protoplasm.— after water for a short time & after water C. of Ammonia & he believes when it was dry.— As far I can make out there is very little segregation in the glands before they are placed in water; but difficult to see on account of coverage of viscid secretion; but differs in different flower stems or plants. ↘

I had better say that from some cause there is much difference in different specimens in the degree of aggregation of purple-matter

In the specs' examined by me after only a few minutes in water, the aggregation could not have been thus caused judging by other specimens, which I kept for some hours in water & with no marked segregation! (After keeping some glands for 5˚ 30' in water, they were not more or much more segregated than when first put in) at 4˚ 45 put in C. of amm. (2 gr to 1 oz) & next morning

I have been looking at plants & very few insects caught.—
