Drosera

Nov. 23 / 73 / 8º A.m. 6 leaves in Hot-house, some very pale some rather pale.    with bits of square fresh cabbage leaves— 2 with laminae — 2 with bits of succulent midrib, cut out of middle.

2º 30'    almost all leaves partially inflected.

24th. 8º A.m.    all fairly well clasped — (12h)

25th 12º.  still clasped, but I think some are opening ( none have been closely as over meat.) but still I think closer than over inorganic substances. 48 [+] 4 [=] 52h.

26' I forgot t look

27'    8º A m.    No' II. bit of lamina fell fallen off, fully rexpanded — cabbage not affected — put on meat (28th meat fairly well clasped.) ( 29th 8º A m. thoroughly clasped.) ( 30th do ) (Dec 1 do ) 4 days

― ' stick with 2 pins — core of cabbage — still fairly well clasped & covered with viscid acid juice (.28th partially reexpanded.) ( 29th still clasped, but glands drying) (30th glands dead) cabbage retain its outline (4 days)

― 3.  leaf shrivelled old still with few clasped

― 4. lamina of cabbage fully reexpanded;— put on meat (.28th meat fairly well slightly clasped.) (29th leaf too old & dying.) (30' many tentacles still clasped) Dec 1 dried up

[133v]

27th    Nor. 6. bit of core of cabbage— tentacles almost completely reexpanded— bit of core softened, but still perfectly cubical. — secretion secretion acid, put on bit of meat.— ( 28th, meat very little action) (.29th moderate action, leaf too old & dying.) (30' do) (Dec 1' dried up )—

Nor    Core dried up & still Cubical angular — tentacles almost completely reexpanded,— put on bit of meat. ( 28th meat some action.) (29th pretty well clasped.) ( 30' do ) (— Dec' 1 dried up )

Leaves too feeble — but case shows that bit of cabbage act far more energetically than bits of inorganic— & that thy are not dissolved like bit of meat & act less energetically than meat— In animals stomach warmed & triturated — Cooking aids Drosera as we see with boiled & simmered cabbage,— as it does animal digestion —
