Dec. 31. 72 Leaf of Zonal Pelargonium. —

with short Hairs, —some single & pointed — some act longer or short, with globular Heads— apparently no secretion — with transverse partition.

I carefully examined in water first a strip of a leaf in simple water & no the Head contained only spheres within Heads [illeg] fluid; I then place the other — added a little C. of A. 3 gr to 1 oz, but really weaker as there was water under slide & in 3' trace of segregation in 5' in the globe on smaller shorter hairs, numerous spheres formed, which apparently went no further change — rapidly formed — in larger globes on longer head— few larger spheres were formed & those within broken aggregated up into small spheres, contained

In few cases small spheres were formed in the pedicels of the shorter Hairs. —

Proves absorption interesting in relation to the process of. Drosera.

(If instead of brushing the centre of the leaf or putting on it any some small object or certain fluids, [penciled line illeg] the gland of a single tentacle [penciled line illeg] is repeatedly touched by a needle, or a wonderfully small an extremely minute atom of any organic or inorganic substance, weaker doubt the [illeg] action & drop be is gently placed on it, or it is moistened with certain fluids, this one tentacle alone becomes inflected, & if, how the gland curved is carried to c near to the centre of the [text excised] [two words illeg] place on one or 2 or 3 tentacle is carried to centre. This acts as if irregularly between them
