July 14th /73/ Nitrate of Ammonia weighed by Borders Double Method 1 gr. to 20 oz.
(1) water 10. 22' (11. 25' , inflected) (4º 35' outer discals forming ring, 1 marginal inflected a few sub-marginals, sub-inflected) (15th, 8. all but outer marginals inflected)
Nitrate 10. 14' —(10. 21' some inflect) (not blackened) 10. 27' enormous inflect
(10' 40' all inflected except 8 & these sub-inflected) (Perhaps darker red) (11. 25' not black)
(4º 35', all inflected & lamina immensely & no segregation as seen through lens !
(25th, 8. all)
(2) water 10. 23' (11. 25' 1 sub-inflected) (4º. 35'. do)
15' 8. slight ring on disc)
nitrate small pale leaf 10. 16 (10. 27 much I) (11. 25' a good deal of sub-inflect)
(4º. 35' all inflected, lamina immensely infl — no segregation visible through lens !!!
(4º 35' discals forming ring, sub-marginals sub-inflected.) (15th 8. reexpanding)
(3) water 10. 25; (11. 25' , O). (4º 35'. O) (15th . 8º, O/
Nitrate small palish 10. 17' (10 27' much I.) (11. 26' almost all the sub-marginals I.)
(4º. 40' all except 5 inflected) I think very fine segregation as seem through lens.)
(15 8. all except 3)
(4) water 10. 27' (11. 27' . 1 long-Head) (4º. 40' discals forming a ring; 1 long-Head inflected ; sub-marginals well sub-inflected) (15th, 8º, do)
Nitrate 10. 18' (10 28' some inflection) (11. 26', some over pedicel I.)
(4º 40' sub-marginals slightly inflected.) (15th, 8. reexpanding
(4º 30' glands very little darker than water specs) !
(15th 8. 10' I do not see that Glands at all darker than in water spec.s : fine-grained segregation but so there is in water specimens

―
(5) 1 water 10 50' (4º 28' all but about 10 marginals
(11. 28' , O) (4º 45' outer discals & sub-marginals forming good ring.)
(15th, 8. 10', do)
Nitrate 10. 44' 12 (10 56' much I) (11. 28 16 [+] 28 [=] 44 all but about 10 marginals.)
(1. all but 5 inflected) (4º. 45', lamina sub-inflected all except 3 outer rows inflected.)
(15th 8. 10' lamina inflected do—) Glands not at all darker.)
(6) 2 water (4º 45', 5 marginals inflected)
(15' 8. 10' discals & sub-marginals well inflected)
Nitrate 10. 45' (10. 56' great I (11. 28' 28 [+] 15 [=] 43 all but 7 marginal I)
(4º 45' do) (15th 8. 15' all but 2 grandly inflected lamina inflected)
(7) 3 water 10 54' —(11. 29' ,)) (4º 45', )) (15', 8. 15', O)
Nitrate old leaf 10. 47' (11. 29' only 2 or 3 I) (4º 45', do)
(15th 8. 15' a trace of a ring on disc)
(8) 4 water 10. 55' (11. 30', O) ,(4º 45, O)
(15' 8. 15' the outer discals & sub-marginals slightly inflected)
Nitrate 10. 48' (10. 57' great I.) 11. 30 all but 4 I.)
glands dark red, but not blacked) (1. do about colour) (4º. 45' all except 6 inflected.)
(15th 8. 15 every single tentacle inflected & all but 2 or 3 closely, lamina inflected)
1. 45' a general summary of all 8, those in the Nitrate have darker-red glands
It is very remarkable how little segregation compared with the tentacles in weaker solution of Phosphate.—

Gluten ( 6 & 7 ) continued — Sept 16 gluten in water, much softened & fine blue from some fungus?
(Sept 17th 8. 15' in the open leaf with stained gluten looks healthy glands on disc a shade darkened & other inflected leaf glands very black, secretion still acid (18' 19. 20' The 2d leaf now expanding, glands blackened, much gluten left on disc : secretion still acid)
(19th 10. 15 — Both leaves expanded do do do much gluten left on disc

There can be no shadow of doubt that the 4 in the sol of Nitrate 1 gr to 40 oz infinitely more affected than 4 corresponding Water spec.s but glands not plainly darker ; nor more or so much segregation.

(11. 50', 56 marginals inflect) (4º 43' do & outer discals & inner marginals forming fine ring, yet many marginals not in the least inflected.) (This leaf much more affected than any others ; but very little difference form water specimens)

(1) water 8. 15' —(9. 14º, O) (11. 27', O) (4º 40' I find 2 marginal have been inflected)
nitrate 8. 7' —(8. 45 a few inflected) (9. 14' about 26 marginals sub- inflected or inflected) (11. 30' do)
4º 45 all reexpanded

nitrate 8. 10' (8. 45' a few inflected) (9. 15' , 9 or 10 marginals inflect. or sub inf)
(11. 30', 14 or 15 tentacles sub-inflected) (4º 45' almost reexpanded)
(4) water 8. 18' (9. 15 a few Long-Heads sub-inflected)

(4º 45' no inflection)
11. 33' The nitrate ones not more plainly inflected than the water, or only a trace.
4º 45'. The water spec now showed more inflection than the Nitrates.
