July 19 /73/ Carbonate of Ammonia    1 gr. to 20 oz.

(1) water 8O 15'    (10O 45', O) (2O 30' ,O)    (July 20th 8Of. 30', O)

little Carbonate put in vessel

(The water specimen too old leaves)

carbonate    8O 5 (9. 3'    glands so dark red almost blackened)    This held good with all 4 specimen)

(10O 45' a few over pedicel inflected) (2O 30', all inflected excpt 1) (July 20 8O 20' do)

— see Nitrate Back

(2) water 8O 15' —(10O 45', O). (1O the outer discals of short sub-marginals forming fine ring)    (July 20th 8O 20    great inflection excpt of outer 3 rows of outer marginals)

carbonate    8O 7'    (10O 45' a few over pedicel inflected) (2O 20' only 1 inflected)    (July 20'    8O 20'     O.)

(3) water — (10, 45', o)    (2O 30', O) (July 20th    8O 20' ,O)

   carbonate    8O 8'    (10O 45', 3 long Heads) (2O 30' all reexpanded)    (July 20    8O 20' ,O)

(4) water    8O. 18' — (10O 45' ,O) (2O 30'    2 sub-marginals inflected)    (July 20'    8O 20', O)

carbonate young leaf 8O 10' (8O 20' several tentacles inflected) (9.. 4 a large no inflect) (10O 45,    30 or 4 inflected) (2O 30' only 8 inflected)    (July 20'    8O 20'    O)

It is wonderful how much less action the Carbonate than Nitrate. I put in 2 very red & oldish leaves in 30 m. of 1 gr to 20 oz of the Nitrate & almost all the tentacles were inflected in 15'.— but the glands not rendered black though perhaps darker red—    I tried this from seeing so little action that I fancied these very new red leaves would not act

(5) water Carbonate 8O. 26' (8 57' glands blackened, glands of all leaves in this sol. blackened) (10O 50' some sub-inflection) (Glands now in all very black)    (2O 30' very little inflection)

(No Water specimens on this page)

carbonate (?)    8O 27' (glands do)

(10O 50; some sub-inflection) (2O 30' do)

(6.) water Carbonate 8O 28' —(10O 50' 2 or 3 inflected) (2O 30' do)

carbonate (9) 8O 29' — (10 30', some sub-inflection) (2O 30', do)

(7) water (5) Carbon 8O 48' (pale leaf) (8O 59' some inflection) (9. 10' all but 7 inflected)    (10' 50' much sub-inflection) (2O 35' do)

carbonate (6) 8O 50; pale( leaf) (8O 59' great inflection) (9. 43' all except 7 or 8 inflect) but inf.    (10' 50' do) (2O 35', do)

(9. 10    the gland of all these 6 specimens much blackened.)    July 20' 8. 15 very little inflection in these 6 specimens, I suspect dose too strong)

(written over entries (5)—(8)) / Abstract

(1 gr. to 100 oz)

(8)  Carbon (pale leaf) 8O 53' (8O 58' some inflection, gl not blackened) (9. 8' many inflected 9. 40; all excpt 40) (10' 55' do not blackened) (1O lamina much inflected)

(2O 35' all excpt 8 inflected) (July 20th    8O 15' beginning to reexpand: in neither of these 2 specimen glands at all blackened.)

N

carbonate (pale leaf) 8O 54' (8O 58 some inflect gl not blacked) (9. 8' all the tentacles except 9 marginals closely inflected  ; glands not blackened

(9. 40' all except 8)  (9.. 40', all inflected except 40 tent)  ; not blackened) (10O 53' do. ; not blackened) (1O lamina much inflected.) (2O 35', all more or less inflected) (July 20' 8O 15' much segregation, beginning to reexpand)

This page well shows vast differences in sensitivity    1 young & old leaves

July 22d    Carb. of Am.    1 gr to 200 oz ( 1/2 dr.)

(1) Water young pale leaf 8O. 31' ((10, 48' enormously inflected)) (transposition indicated with (...))

4O 30' all extreme outer marginals closely inflected

Carb. young leaf 8O. 25' ((,10 50' tr ten or 12 marginals & shorter inner sub-marginals forming ring))

   (4O 30' only a ring on disc)

Aggregation see Back

(2) water young leaf 8O 32' (10O 50', outer discals a little inflected) (transposition indicated with '(10O ...' below)

   (4O 30' outer discals & inner sub-marginal forming a fine ring.)

Car. old leaf 8O 27' (10O 50' tr 2 or 3 marginals)

(4O 30' trace of ring on disc)

(I daresay intense Heat of day caused so much inflection in the Water specimens)

(3) water old leaf 8O 33' (10 52', s-marginal over pedicel inflect or sub-inflected)

   (4O 30' all reexpanded)

Carb. young leaf 8O. 28'    (10O. 53' 4 or 5 marginal inflect)

   (4O 30' ring on disc)

(4) water old 8O 35' (10O 53'   O) (4O 30', O)

Carb. 8O. 29' (10 '55'    2 marginal) (4O 30' ,O)

4O 31' Th water spec. more conspicuously inflected than the C. of Am spec

11O No effect from this dose of C. of Am

31v

9. 33' no action on any carbonates

(2O 30' no 4 Carb. of Am. & no 4 water compared,   probably a trace more seg in the former than in the latter, but not well marked.)

Certainly a little more seg in the C. of A. than in water

(7) water    8O 51' (10O 48' ,O) (12. 49', O) (4O 45', O)

   both very pale leaves

Carbonate    8O 52'    (10. 48', 11 inflected) (12O 49, 9 inflected)    (4O 45' all but one marginal reexpanded)

(8) red water 8O 58 (10O 48', 2 inflected) (12O 50', 2 sub-inflected) (4O 4 50', well expanded)

carbonate red leaf 8O 53' (8O 58' some inflect) (10O 48' almost 1/2 inflected    (12. 50', all but 45 inflected) (4O 50', do just same state)

(10O 45' comparing all 8 no doubt much or action in the Carbonate than in the water specs.)

(I may add in the 2 tried on a previous day 1 gr to 100 oz extreme limit of action)
