Aug. 22d /73/ 10O 25'—30' Drosera
2 Red Sticks point cube of albumen less than about the 1/20' thick & broad & about 1/10 of inch square long. (N. B. I tried all these leaves, a few glands on each & none coloured the litmus paper.) (5O. 15' a good deal inflected, especially on nearest margin not acid
(Aug 23d. 8O. 15' A.m. secretion close to albumen now very decidedly acid, but the exterior tentacles which have not become inflected, in neither leaf at all acid, good.) (5O P.m. repeated the observation, as above, on secretion of both leaves, with the same result.) (24th 8O A.m Albumen all dissolved & absorbed — secretion spread on disc acid, but not secretion of uninflected exterior glands.)
2 (Leaves) black sticks do. with 2 minute drops (with Pin Head each about 1/20' of minm) of C. of Soda 1 gr. to 1 oz, added at the same time. (5O. 15' some inflection in one leaf & a little in the other)
(23d 8O 20' one with lamina much inflected, no doubt owing to soda added over C. of Soda) (5O. P.m. do, added more soda.) (24th 8O 15; A.m. one if these now expanded the albumen all absorbed & secretion on disc acid ! How much must be secreted) : the second one with much glassy fluid, unabsorbed, & now very acid
46h.
1 Blue stick do, but the C. of Soda added at 3O 10' when tentacles had closed. (At 3O 10' well clasped & I added 3 drops of the C. of Soda.—) (Aug 23d 8O 20' so tremendously inflected that I think killed.) (5O P.m. added more soda) (24th 8O 15 leaf now opening, disc with glassy fluid, acid.)
(It is clear soda not near strong enough examine after 24O)
Too very Weak
2 leaves yellow & red stick do. but the do. do. with do. of C. of Potash
(5O 15' some inflection in one consid. inflection in the other). (23d 8O 30', do about inflection, & secretion very acid in both leaves red albumen, but not so that of the exterior non-inflected tentacles, added more C. of Potash— We thus see enough acid secretion to neutralise the alkali in the albumen & in the first dose of Potash) (5O. P.m. not acid now.) 24th 8O 25' leaves new reexpanded & albumen dissolved & fluid on disc in both leaves acid, but not the secretion of the exterior uninflected tentacles —
(add 2 other cases of uninflected tentacles not acid)

It is manifest from these experiments that glands of inflected tents, go on secreting — good deal of acid & that alkali have to be continually added. & this addition do not interfere with digestion.

Aug 24th 1873 Digestion (10O 40' to 50')
2 cubes each about 1/40' of inch to each leaf say 10O 45' (-) 8 15 (=) 2. 30 2 little cubes were placed on each leaf
2 sticks with pin paper cubes, of albumen 1/20' of inch square
2O 45' no' of well clasped —(3O. 30' splendidly inflected)
24 (x) 3 (=) 72 (?) 2.45
13' slightly do (5O 30' do)
Aug 25' 8O 25' in both leaves cubes completely rounded — after 21h. 30m
― 26 8 45' in one leaf all transparent glassy fluid, in other leaf glassy fluid with a little white mote in middle aft 46h.
27th 8O A.. Both completely dissolved, with some little transparent fluid on disc of one & tentacles almost fully reexpanded
2 stick with 1 pale do with albumen & small minute drop of C. of Soda 4 gr. to 1 oz of water
(good)
(2O 45' 1 slightly clasped, added more soda, the other hardly at all
(5O 30' do do do)
(10O P.m. do do
(25th 8O 20' cubes perfect added minute drop of Hydrochloric Acid 1/2 per cent & 1 per cent to the other
(26' 8O 45', leaf with 1 cube quit rounded, the other cube with apparently all angle rounded secretion acid ;lamina of the second leaf so much inflected that I cannot see well, but I think cubes disappeared.)
(27th 8O on one leaf, only some little transparent fluid on disc of leaf— (In other spec. pink ball— perfect i.e. moderately rounded cube of albumen — this was specimen to which 1 per cent acid was given)
( I removed with blotting paper the sol C. of Amm & Potash ) when I added acid
2 stick with 2 pins do with C. of Potash 4 gr to 1 oz
(2O 45' slightly clasped added more C. of Potash
(3O 30' do do do) one moderately clasped.)
(10O P.m. do; but on the round stick put on C. of Soda by mistake.
(25th 8O 25' cubes perfect added acid as above
(26th 8O 45: 1 leaf with only one cube, rounded, & leaf seem injured & albumen red; the other leaf with so many tentacles inflected that I cam hardy see, but I think cube almost dissolved.)
(27th 8O A.m — on one leaf all well dissolved. ( on others cubes almost perfect & coloured pink to which too strong acid was given, ie. 1 per cent)
( I completed the Acid arrangements on all leaves at 9. A.m. on the 25th)

Artificial digestion of Albumen
That digestion shd. go on such closely analogous principles in veg. & A. Kingdom most extraordinary— though probably acid is different.—
It is pretty clear that 1 per cent checks digestion & extract colouring matter. — But when 1/2 per cent is given digestion goes on perfectly well. — I may say if too strong acid given digestion delayed or quit stopped— ie. 1 per cent.
Spot of some. cubes.
