Sept 6th    10O 35'    Digestion of Albumen    (p 74)

   (1873)

3 nil 2nil Sticks with Pins, cubes of albumen with drops of pure water

4O 50', 2 of leaves grandly inflected over the albumen:— I think albumen rounded    1 3d leaf near margin : added plain water. (10O 20' water added)

Sept 7th    10O 55'    2 leaves with mere minute spheres of white left — the 3d with larger mass, but seems much rounded & softened.

Sept 8th    10O 25'— white albumen all gone all 3 leaves : one leaf beginning to reexpand

Sept 9' 8O 20'— (1 leaf almost completely rexpanded; the 2 others half re expanded, (adding water to albumen like rain does no harm).

Sept 10th 8O 10' all 3 leaves fully open & albumen all absorbed

   ― 11    10O 30    do       do    do

2 stick Black. cubes of Al. with drops of Hydrochloric Acid 1 to 437.5 of water —    4O 50' I think albumen rounded in one; in the other lamina inflected— .added acid to both (10 20' acid added)

Sept 7th    11O    every trace of white albumen, but much glassy fluid on disc of leaf —

Sept 8th    10O 25'— one leaf almost reexpanded, the second leaf still closed, (but I injured it a little with bent needle).

(See 73 A for ring disc)

Sept 9th 8O 20'— 1 leaf almost completely reexpand; the other injured one, I think beginning to expand.)

Sept 10. 8O 10    a leaf fully expanded & albumen all absorbed; the other injured leaf may be closely inflected

Sept 14' 10O 30' now partially reexpanded

4 Red sticks. (Sept 6th. 10O 35) Cube of Ab. with drop C. of Soda (sol. 1 to 437.5. water)

Sept 6 5O P.m all 4 leaves much inflected & I added more of the C. of Soda. — (10O 20' soda add.)

   Sept 7th    8O 10' a.m a little more soda added.

― 7th 11O A.m (1) (illegible) pale leaf, I can see some of the straight lines of edge of cubes of albumen plain, but cube much enclosed (Sept 8th. 10O 30' white albumen all gone, & disc of leaf nearly dry) Sept 9th 8O 30' almost fully reexpanded.) Sept 10th 8O fully open & all albumen absorbed    looks quite healthy

— (Sept 7th 11O 12' I added to these 4 specs. some small drops Hydrochloric A.    1 to 874 of water)

(7th — (Sept. 7) 11O 5. (2)    cube quite plain on one side (: Sept. 8th ,10O 30' albumen all gone    disc of leaf nearly dry) (Sept 9' 8O 20', still closed.) (Sept 10th 8O almost fully expanded; looks healthy, all albumen absorbed excpt few traces palish globules attached to gland of expanded outer tentacles. Sep 11 10O 30 looks healthy alb absorbed.

Sept 7. 11O. 10' (3) small leaf cube quite perfect : (Sept 8th. 10O 35', cube now reduced to small sphere of albumen.) (Sept 9th 8O 20' white albumen all quite gone.) Sept 10 8O 15 most tents Half-expanded, ie tents at right angles a little clear albumen on disc) (Sept 11' 10O 30'— almost expanded fully some albumen on disc.) Sept 10th almost all absorbed)

Sept. 7th. 11O. 10' 4 cube moderately well preserved but sub-rounded. .(Sept 8O, 10O 35', cube entirely disappeared) (Sept 9' 8O 30', leaf still quite closed.) (Sept 10', 8O 15', just like No' 3.)

(Sept 11' 10O 30' almost fully expanded, some albumen on disc.) (12th 8O almost all absorbed)

(Sept 14th 10O 30' These latter 4 leaves have fully expanded, but 3 of them do not look very healthy
