1873 Little Prominence on leaves

July 4th The hairs on pedicel consist of 2 or 3 rows of longitudinal cells applied together, pointed, often containing pale purple fluid — & I saw thinnest layer of gliding protoplasm on walls — no spiral vessel in middle — Possibly rudiments of tentacles, for Drosophyllum has tentacles all down leaves to axis, whence they spring. Gold chloride of N. of [3 words illeg]

1873 July 5th. Leaf after immersion for 24° in 1.2 drachm Ph. of ammonia 1 gr. to 100 oz water, with tentacles greatly inflected & contents aggregated had conspicuous curvature of protoplasm, & the purple masses of protoplasm constantly changed formes. — So with tentacles which had clasped meat for 22° — In both these specimens there were very few spheres, instead generally small oval or irregularly globular masses strong together in very irregular manner. Dr B. Sanderson saw curvature &c.
