[118]

July 9th /74/ Fibrous basis of bone decalcified by Hydrochloric acid. by Frank. (Sheep's Bone)

10° 30. 3 leaves with thin bits of do. (Sticks with paper Heads)

(10th. 8° only 1 leaf with submarginal inflected on quite dry paper Head with cross & now absorbed saliva)

(11' 8° all but one leaf which had saliva subsequently fully expanded, & fibrous tissue converted into thick quite transparent viscid mass — It is evident that fibrous tissue does not much excite leaves, but that the digestive fluid liquefies it, but as far as I can judge absorbs very little seems to act like gelatine)

12th 7° 30' the leaf which had saliva now fully reexpanded & all fibrous matter absolutely liquefied & transparent.)

10° 30' (4 Sticks with Pins) both surface damp with saliva & dragged over disc. —

(10th 8° moderately inflected)

(11th 8° one alone inflected, fibrous tissue converted as above: examined matter on 2 leaves under strong simple — not a trace of opacity— in one leaf quite liquid — in other very viscid —

# glands not coloured & no sign of absorption.

July 12th 7° 30' the 2 remaining leaves now fully expanded & viscid matter on discs absolutely transparent, every vestige liquefied
