July 22d.    very hot day — red leaves used, good ones

(9) (5 red). put in at 100° & took out at 145°, & at 8O 50' left in water — Strong Inflection occurred soon after immersion —    4O 30'    tentacles not at all reexpanded — look very bright red. (July 23d. 8O. 15' still in same state with every almost all tentacles closely inflected.)

 (10) (6 red)    put in at 100° & took out at 120 1/2° & at 8O 50' put in & left in cold water — Soon after immersion all tent except extreme marginals become well & closely inflected. (4O. 30' in 7 1/2 hr partly reexpanded.) (7' P.m. 10O fully expanded, then put in weak C. of Ammonia) (July 23d    8O. 15'    no marked inflection. glands blackened— great segregation.)

(11)    put in at 130° & took out at 145° — No inflection —  now glands like porcelain 8O 55' put in cold water (10O 15 half the tentacles over pedicel become spontaneously inflected)

10O 23' put in the C. of Am. (10O. 55'    glands intensely black, all sub-marginals well inflected)

(1O    every tent. except 8 or 10 closely inflected.

(4O 20'    under compound, good seg, with small purple spheres, but some few of the longest marginals have hardy any & are killed with brownish pulpy matter like those exposed to 150°.

(12) put in at 140° took out at 150°— no inflection. (8O 55' put in cold water) glands pink porcelain; but some of them still slightly clouded with purple here & there — outer tents (tentacles very bright red) reflexed    the tips of glands often less affected or made like porcelain than lower parts (10O 23' put in the C. of Amm (1O all the tents greenish-brown mud-coloured, no inflection) (4O 30' under compound no segregation.

(13) put in at 145° took out at 156°— tents bright red — somewhat reflexed — pink-porcelain on disc  white porcelain on marginal tents

8O 58'    put in cold water (10O 23' put in to C. of Am) (1O tentacles muddy greenish-brown)

(4O 30', under compound, no seg except in 4 or 5 tent, which had not glands porcelain & these towards the tips the tips no true inflection were much incurved like f(illeg)-paper & there was a trace of seg. true minute spheres of purplish matter. — Very odd case, these few tents. escaping & shows  well how inflection & seg: & glands not becoming like porcelain all go together.

This case show clearly that the protoplasm after being treated retain the power of rendering aggregation, though not well preserved.) from the action. of C. of Am., acted after being treated, until the heat is sufficient to cause coagulation.

(14) put in about 135° nil taken out at 145° No inflection. — put in cold water 10O 43', & In 3 or 4 glands a trace of porcelain X to blue underline below nil appearance.    here & there a little cloud or dots of it (11O 30'    glands blackened) (1O no inflection, so different from some cases, & I can see with lens seg. — (2O 40' under compound, spheres perfect, but very pale with a few larger, cells not transparent; in some of the longer outer tents, hardly any seg, cells full of greenish-brown matter as in the spheres. exposed to 150°

 (15)    leaf treated like (14) glands not like porcelain — tents. very red — (10O 43' [+] 17   put in cold water & left in it ie no C. of Amm)(11O 14' 17 [+] 18 [=] 35' good deal of spont inflection)(11O 33'    a ring of sub-marginal inflected)

(1O all inflected except 13 or 14 extreme marginals.)

(5O 20'    do    except 16 or 17. perhaps I counted wrong before.)

   July 23d  8O 15 still inflected & apparently dead & pale.

July 26th    I heated 3 oz of sol. of Phosphate of Amm. (1 gr to 20 oz) to 110° & put in 2 leaves: — traces of inflection in 1' but in 5' only moderate inflection.— By this time the Thermometer had fallen to 100°.— — Does not seem to make much difference.
