(Ammonia)

likewise sometimes cause the inflection of the lamina; & this is a result which rarely or never followed from an immersion of a few hours in pure water. In the case of the carbonate of ammonia we have additional evidence in the blackening of the glands & in the early aggregation of the protoplasm & within the cells of the tentacles. After the most anxious consideration, the sole source of doubt which occurs to me, & this certainly does not apply to many cases in that I may have unconsciously selected better & more vigorous leaves for the experiments with the salts of ammonia than those whorl were immersed in the water.
