June 9th /74/ Precipitated Carb of Lime diffused in distilled water.
(like milk)
2 leaves 12O 37'
12O 43' (i e after 6m) !! very marked inflection & much lime (almost every single tentacle much subinflcted) adhering to viscid secretion — How does it get to gland ? (to 'I' below)
(Give analogous case of S. of Quinine)
I observe under strong power of simple microscope on many of glands excessively minute particles of C. of lime : I presume water sets the viscid secretion into movement & these particles are sucked in. These particles per hundred many time smaller than the bits of hair &c — which I placed on secretion. —
Comes under small particles acting
(I have been putting glands in water & I can June 10th only say that drops of secretions swells up instantly & largely.)Citation: John van Wyhe, ed. 2002-. The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online. (http://darwin-online.org.uk/)
