(8.02 1 with a good deal of inflection)

- 8.02 leaf somewhat inflected

8.50 glands rather dark

9.40 the 3d pale leaf now somewhat inflected

(The secreted mucous already cloudy)

(10.30 glands now look all pale : all 3 strong inflected

(10.50 agglutinated flat bottom examined 11 [illeg] [illeg] missing

(I never saw it so quick)

(12.20 protoplasm still moving) (Lam. Of me [illeg] in fluid)

(2 all glands quite white)

(2.45 Protoplasm still moving) very rapidly, but agg. Not great)

(4.30 2 leaves with almost grey to inflected 2d with all but one 19 marginal hairs are inflected) the third with all but extreme marginals.

-W[illeg] & placed 2 leaves in d. water: no mucous secreted.

(23d 7.40 I do not think one t. expanded — glands 1 now white.)

8 touched [illeg] gland —Blue head will drop a pin.

8.06 1 tip has incurred a little – (8.15 close inflection of several tentacles) (10.30, 8 true marginal closely or sub-inflected)

23d 7.30 7 t. still inflected & glands white red, & yet all 8 glands were touched only with 2 drops each of 1/21 of m. of col. 1 gr to 1 oz

24th the inflected glands almost straight, some quite straight, 3 glands still almost white

Cobra Poison

Is this alkaloid?

[illeg] return cobra.

Effect on ciliae ?

Perhaps the glands stop all the poison going down to pelical

23d 8.15 3 Sticks with match heads

½ minim drop of sol of Cobra poison.—

12.30 much inflection

2.45 2 leaves closely inflected & with laminae the 3d with only abt to the [illeg] & shortened marginals only inflected

24th 8.20 in same state.

25th almost full reexpanded —glands on disc pale

Drosera Cobra Poison

June 27th 11.04 ½ gr to 1 [illeg]. Or 4 gr to 1 oz.

2 leaves one read & one pale each with 30 minims of [illeg] in watch-glass.

✓ 11.15 I see mucous all like balls of clouds

12.50 after 1.45 in both leaves all sub-marg. Greatly inflected —glands becoming pale

2.30 after 3.30 Both [illeg] inflected & glands quite white

(5.30 I see aggregation; coming inflected)

[in another hand:] June 28th 11.10 in rapid movement. much aggregated in chain of full [illeg] & [illeg] extremely rapid.

5.30 PM moving v rapidly: seen moving with Haitnack No 5

June 29 11 AM. Moving well— (48º)

June 29

11 AM ie after 48 hrs in cobra

Washed the whitest of the two cobra leaves & put it in distilled w

Washed the other leaf (with hairs not out) & put it in same dish of distilled at 11.30 — [in Darwin's hand:] 7 PM Both leaves completely reexpanded—

30th 7.30 —certainly both leaves somewhat expanded

8 put the cut leaf in C. of ammonia 2 gr to 1 oz

[two sketches]

8.31 almost certain dark aggregated in peli[illeg] close to glands

9.30 put under compd fine larger sphere aggregated masses of rather dingy purple protoplasm in moment—(ie after 3 days) — This shows the [illeg] not injured & glands can still absorb.— secretion [illeg] not a sort of [illeg] tissue.— 5 PM aggregation has extended while length of t. glands dusky on disc chiefly green —not much inflection —July 1st 8 aggregation more [illeg] down

(base & glands blackened but not so black as on ordinary occasions.

July 1st 8 the one kept in water now decidedly more expanded & aggregation all except 1 or 2 spheres have disappeared & replaced by purple fluid. — The section now consists of [illeg] with [illeg] [illeg] granules — [illeg] by drawer at former threads & [illeg] — of [illeg] with defined edges.
