for several hours up to 24, hours & sometimes for a longer period. Although I shall hereafter give the detail of each set of experiments, it may be well here to give A [illeg] to give here a same [text excised] When leaves are thus immersed in pure water a few of the the longer headed tentacles in the extreme margin of the leaves often become inflected, & here it's a curvy corner for [few words illeg] or 2 or 3 [illeg] ; but & commonly not rarely some, & occasionally several round-headed marginal tentacles likewise are well 1/2° quickly inflected.

Thus during during in the summer of 1873 & 1874 102 106? leaves were placed, each in 30 minims of several solution of salts of ammonia, & at

inflected; & after an immersion of 3h eleven out of the whole number of them had on an average 10.8 tentacles inflected; the greatest number being 23 & the least 7; the remaining (95) leaves having in no case more than 6 inflected & very often not a single one. We shall hereafter see that their number amount of inflection is quite insignificant compared with that often caused by extremely weak ammonia solution of the several salts of ammonia But occasionally, especially
