This leaf greatly affected by starch : all hairs inflected, but in different manner to whatever I saw; for nearly every marginal was rendered spiral. — In all the hairs which are more inflected colour would appear — if contraction of upper part caused lower part to curve. —    leaf not so flaccid as with syrup

These leaf & that which was in gum, left in water for 4 days have nearly reexpanded again & the colour though still broken is far less so than at first — especially that which was in gum — showing that absorption of water is main element.

Sept. 30: 9.. 40'    all the hairs which had touched gum are now drawn in for contraction; but long-headed & round-headed marginal which had not touched it still stick out ,but look rather dry & not healthy.
