Fibro- (Cartilage from foot joint of Sheep.

The joint had been slightly roasted, but cartilage quite white, translucent, extremely tough & rather hard. Can D. digest it!!

Nov. 1' 8° 20': 3. Sticks with blue Heads

Cubes of 1/20th. of an inch put on with saliva.

Leaves pale & small in Hot-House

(12° 20' a good deal of inflection — one leaf has quite embraced the cube.)

(4° P.m. 2 leaves with laminæ inflected)

(Nov. 2' 8° Am same state (2 of leaves seem very poor)

Nov. 3d 8°. 10' A.m. All 3 cubes now consist of small spheres of opake matter surrounded by transparent, very acid viscid matter fluid, strong acid — all 3 leaves with laminæ inflected — The Two of the cubes of this solid matter greatly softened & almost liquified to centre — the 3d with small irregular spheres of solid matter in centre. This centre curiously furrowed with minute long ridges.— I need hardly say that the cartilage kept in water for the same time was not at all affected.

[120]

(Cabbage)

Nov. 3d 7° 50' A.m. (3 Stick 6. 8. 9.) Chopped cabbage boiled for about 1 1/2 Hour. — fluid left to settle for 18° much whitish sediment — suppurated fluid beneath surface pretty clear — put on drops, good-size on 3 very pale, small & poor leaves. The drops though not clear showed no signs of — coagulated masses through strong lens —

Minute drop put on 3 or 4 t glands caused the tents to be inflected in a few minutes

Fluid palest very pale dirty green tint.

12° tents & laminæ of all 3 leaves inflected 4 0

4° P.m. I can see no coagulation.

Nov 4th 8' all 3 leaves in most strongly inflected, but almost all the fluid absorbed, but what little fluid left does not appear coagulated. — There is the strongest aggregation in all the tentacles.
