D. Capensis (Kew)

Sept. 16. Limb of leaf elongated, narrowing gradually narrowing towards apex, which is bluntly pointed & reflexed.—

, pedicel foliaceous nearly as broad as limb of leaf — which is greatest peculiarity: leaves crowded round wooded woody axis(?+) (seem to grow into little bush)— Glands Tentacles Tentacles extremely numerous & crowded: those on margin much longer than those on disc. — reflexed — glands red, none no long-Headed — viscid matter extremely viscid.— reddens litmus paper. —

Disc of leaf longitudinally slightly concave.

(Gland-bearing disc above 1 inch long — pedicel as long or longer than disc in my specimen.)

As my plant was recovering from an extremely ill-state of health, the slowness of the movements show nothing. I could not case, perhaps from this reason any movement by routing tentacles.

Atoms of meat, placed on lateral tentacles caused them in 2°. 30' slightly inflected 3° 45, from time of putting on well inflected, & strongly in 2°. 30' additional time. —

Sept. 17. 8° 30' all adjoining tentacles now on same side of leaf, now crowded on the bit of meat

5°. 15' put on bits of flies on 2 leaves near tip. — Sept 17. (in 15°) 8° 30 in both tip of leaf alone bent over, with no lateral inflection of leaf. — now in one case, whole leaf rolled over

Sept 30. I tried again routing tentacles no effect.

D. Capensis

Th minute drops of N. of Ammonia 1 gr to 12 oz in 2°. 30' caused one or two tentacles to be slightly inflected

Put on 2 atoms of cork, of blue glass & cinders: the cork in 2°. 30' caused decided inflection — the others never moved.

Sept 16th 9°. A.m. put squashed fly on the foliaceous pedicel. Sept 17' no effect. — Sept 18th do.

Last

Sept 16th 9° 10 put 1/2 a fly on middle of leaf.— at 5° In few hour the lateral tentacles on both edges curved in & touched the fly. At 5° 15 leaf a little bent transversely under the fly. Sept 17th 8° 30, tip of leaf, bent completely over fly, so that apex rested on pedicel; no lateral inflection of leaf itself, & now Sept 18' middle of leaf rolled closely round the fly
