Dec 4 1862 Dutch Clover in pots out of doors took in House at 5° P.m & put 1/2 tea-spoon of Ether for 2°. 35'. i.e. 7° At 6° 30' other plant ie without Ether vestige of sleep at 7° 30' still more so & at 8° do — It considerably asleep. —

The etherised plant at 7° 30' not at all asleep; but at 9° was considerably asleep.

This plant went to sleep next night so not injured.

Dec 5th Gave the fresh plant nearly spoon-full of Ether in Bell glass from 5°. 30' to 8° 30' (& when bell-glass which was pressed down was removed good smell of Ether) — when plant put under leaves just a trifle raised; & at 8° 30' was well asleep, but not so profoundly as I have seen. This seems to prove that Ether does not stop sleep-movement —

This etherised plant opened next morning perfectly.
