(Keep for particles)

June 8th 7° 8 45' 3 leaves in S. of Quinine at 8° great inflection in 2 leaves, not filtered particles floating about considerable in 3d leaf—

10° enormous inflection in all. (it may be grain of undissolved Salt) glands very dark dusky red — excellent aggregation.

(at 10° 50' put 1 leaf into C. of Ammonia 2 gr to 1 oz)

at 11° to 11° 10' examined one leaf (ie after immersion of 3h 15m) which was closely inflected & all the tentacles showed grt. aggr. down to their bases; many of the purple masses of protoplasm were spherical. I observed carefully & sketched & the masses of protoplasm were slowly & continually changing form — I saw a spherical ball slowly approach an oval one & become confluent with it. I observed grt change of outline in another oddly shaped masses. It may be that the Q. had not penetrated as yet, but had only acted on the dusky glands: but yet I think some Q. must have penetrated because as we shall see C. of Ammonia cause peculiar effect. The short green upright tentacles were also aggregated to their bases. I saw what I do not doubt were vacuoles within the masses of protoplasm The continuation is at back of Camphor Memorandum.
