that the land has not recently subsided, subject, however, to doubt from the possibility of their reef having just begun to grow again after having been in same manner been destroyed. and growing again in such cases. These presence, shows however, does But they do not tell us whether a shore the land is is rising or stationary; but nevertheless the crust of the earth is subject seems liable to such frequent incessant changes of level that a long-continued stationary condition seems to be the exception as apparently is rare. We may infer that this is so from the number of cases within the limits of our maps in which upraised coasts or other organic remains have been observed found on the shore which are fringed with reefs, and are therefore coloured red. It may, be mentioned as bearing on this subject, that I was much surprised, when I first read.
