Sept 20th
Syrup (which caused Strongest exosmose) 5 spec left on from 32 to 48 hours no effect, except 1 spec had 2 hairs inflected. (3 tested with milk & gelatin affected)
Sept 9th 2 specs 26 hours 43 hours no effect. (Both tested with albumen & milk & well inflected.)
― 1 spec. (very thick syrup) (45.) no effect (Tested by Gelatine Strongly inflected)

Gum 2. spec. 26 43 hours. no effect (Both tested with albumen & milk & well inflected

Oct Sept 29th 4. spec ((Gum so thick as hardy to drop.)) 24. to 32. (all 4 tested by milk & urine, 2 affected 2 not affected)
Sept 30' 3 spec (Olivers gum) (26. to 44.) (tested all 3 with albumen, 2 pretty well inflected, one not so)
Starch Sept. 29th. (as thick as others) 4. specs (31.) no effect (4 tested with urine & milk, 2 moderately affected 2 not.)

Infusion Sherry 1 spe 41. no effect — sometime case injury 3 spec (31.) no effect (1 tested by milk affected)
Oil 30. (1) no effect 1 tested no effect albumen

Acetic acid 6 sp (2 minim to 1 oz.) just acidulated to taste no effect in 25.

Saliva 19.. 30' all margin hairs (excpt 7) inflected — did not produce great effect / in 2. a few margin inflected. in 7.. 30' all terminal margin & edge of leaf inflected / in 17. all round-headed exc margin well closed in, but not the long-headed/
Hence (not counting the 7 experiment with the very weak gelatin)

49 — failed in 2; & one of them was certainly subsequently acted on by milk.
Young & vigorous leaves must be chosen for these proportions.
Now if we compare this with the 38 leaves (excluding water) which did not act & remember how few proportion of these which acted when subsequently tested — & remember the difference of action of solid substance, we to no respect to doubt that leaves detect nitrogenous matter. — As mechanical action & as we shall see certain salts act Turpentine. Creosote — Peppermint
As milk cannot be absorbed on appearance I was led to try salts.— curious results form smallest of doses. —
As saliva acts, not less 1 per cent— I tried what would be minimum. 10 drops Car of Am in 6 oz of water— This probably liquid.

Urine 25. 30; terminal edge most Strongly / 17. two leaves every single hair inflect but not leaf itself
