Summary

Milk    10

Urine    12

Gelatin    8    Tea. 2. with 30. no effect

Albumen    7

M[illeg]    1

Mucus    3

Saliva    8

49 — failed in 2; & one of them was certainly subsequently acted on by milk.

Young & vigorous leaves must be chosen for these proportions.

Now if we compare this with the 38 leaves (excluding water) which did not act & remember how few proportion of these which acted when subsequently tested — & remember the difference of action of solid substance, we to no respect to doubt that leaves detect nitrogenous matter. — As mechanical action & as we shall see certain salts act    Turpentine. Creosote — Peppermint

As milk cannot be absorbed on appearance I was led to try salts.— curious results form smallest of doses. —

As saliva acts, not less 1 per cent— I tried what would be minimum. 10 drops Car of Am in 6 oz of water— This probably liquid.
