p. 335 — Sumatra many apes: Java 3 kinds; Bali 2 & Lombok 1, — here no tigers, panthers, large wild cats or dogs — neither Rhinoceros or Elephant. In forest, squirrel of Java & ruminating animals as common as in Java.

The horses a cross between those of Bima & Bali.

p. 334. "There is an unusual, a very wonderful variety of Ducks. They are lean with very few feathers, more nearly straight & have a very long neck.

p. 343. speaks of crossing horses with Bima, Lombok, or Makassar breeds. The Bima breed very distinct from the Bali breed.

An account of the island of Bawean or Lubek — Horses distinguished for extreme smallness — Hogs wild are smaller & have a much more pointed head than in Java

Vol. V. p. 681. H. Zollinger on the Lampong Districts. (S. end of Sumatra ). the great difference in Zoology of Sumatra & Java, separated by narrow Strait, a proof they never never united. Lampong has 3 apes different from those of Java: 2 cats & a Viverra strangers to Java — Malayan Bear & Elephant wanting in Java — In place of the Rhinoceros of Java we have R. Sumatrensis — & in place of Cervus rusa. C. equinus — The tapir present in Sumatra, whereas the Bos sundaica so common in Java absent in Sumatra.

p. 692. The Buffaloes of Lampong larger & darker than those of Java.
