Vol. XI. p. 458. F. Cuvier sur le Chien de la N. Hollande

gives most striking account of difference in habits from English dog, in audacity, disobedience, unsociability, indifference to caresses, no idea of man's power.

Cuvier praises much Leroy's accuracy & experience & quotes Lettre V. giving an account of quite young foxes when first coming out of earth greater caution in places where they have been disturbed. — this is incontestible Le Roy says. —

Tom. XII. p. 119. F. Cuvier sur l'accouplement d'un cigne &c.

p. 120 — says nearly all animals in confinement show desire, but rarely couple — the several Ducks kept at the Jardin have never coupled — yet with all this hybrids not rarely occur — Anas fuliginosa (m.) has produced with A. sponsa (f) — A swan Anas olor with female common goose A. anser.

p. 125. attribute the non-breeding of animals in confinement to the difference in their characters "to a greater disposition to fear in some than in others"

Allude to this — Plants !! —
