Vol. 4. p. 737. "Dr T. Bell Salter on fertility of certain Hybrids"

p. 738. quotes from Prof. Bell that with hens, domestic goose & swan-goose (Cygnus Guineensis) readily bred together. The male & female hybrids bred readily with the pure parents, but not with each other.

Dr S. suspected with an opinion once held by Sir J. E. Smart that Epilobium roseum was hybrid between E. montanum & E. tetragonum: latter was impregnated ten years ago by pollen of E. montanum & the plants produced were intermediate, but not like E. roseum: for 4 successive generations raised plants from Hybrid seed, & since then,i e for 4 years more continued to come up in garden.

October 1852. — & now in letter he speaks of them continuing to come up. — 2 out of the whole very large number of hybrids were abnormal types with a stronger resemblance toone parent, — with similar slight exceptions keep same characters to present day. — He also made reciprocal cross but hybrids were similar. —

He tried many times to make bybrid difference as artificial hybrid. [illeg] Linaria repens & vusariis & between Sesopharlerlia mados & aguestica, but always quite failed, plants yielding no seed.—

No had has ever doubted the specific difference of the two Lemnas & Equilibriums.—

(Even if slightly fewer number of seeds I do not see that this slightly lessened fertility is very important.
