Silliman N. Am. Journal Vol VII. n.s.

p. 48 De Verneuil, speaking of Carboniferous system of U. S. says by a remarkable exception many species of this system have circumscribed vertical limits & very extensive horizontal distribution.

p. 51. speaking of the succession of new species, areas that it is independent of the depth of the sea & equally "of the upheavings which have affected the surface of the globe; for from the E. frontier of Russia, even to Missouri, distant from or near the lines of dislocation, in the horizontal beds as well as in those which are disturbed. The law according to which it is accomplished appears to be uniform." Good to show how shells &c now become rare disappear, & then to show that it was formerly so

(12) Vol VII. n.s. p 66. Review of Stricklands Book on Dodo. The 3 islands of Mauritius, Rodriguez & Bourbon were inhabited by at least 4 distinct, but probably allied species of brevipennate birds - a case analogous with N. Zealand - These facts make me believe in Forbes. Turtles in Mauritius. Study map.

Vol IX p. 135. Prof. Adams states, of the 230 Helicidæ found on Jamaica & Cuba, only 9 said to be in common - whereas the marine shells widely extended - Of Jamaica shells only from 6 to 9 per cent found anywhere else. Dr Gould has found Land shells of islands in Pacific much confined to separate islands.
