vol. 5. p 156 Gärtners Observations on Muling by Rev. M. J. Berkeley. A most valuable Paper to be read again, & this Part ordered.

p 158 To hybridise requires a more delicate adjustments of favourable conditions – The results vary in efficacy far more than in normal impregnation.

p. 159 Warmth requisite, D. chinensis & which can set their own seed in autumn cannot be hybridised Hybrid Daturæ & mule Pinks produce capsules far richer in seeds than the pure species whence arisen.

p. 162 by triple impregnation 3 forms frm same capsule.

p. 163 In hybrids when neither pollen of pure. male or female parent is effective, fecundation effected by a third foreign allied species

p. 164 Lobelia fulgens cannot be impregnated by own pollen, yields fruct to pollen of L. cardinalis & L. sylvestris; yet pollen of L. fulgens will act on these 2 species & so show it is good. So Zephyranthes very important, as showing how little related to specification or any distinct law that species may not be confounded.

p. 165 cases of Peas with colour of seed affected, discussed.

p 165 In some Hybrids, maternal in some paternal most strongly predominates.

p 166 out of 700 species experimented on, 250 true Hybrids raised; perhaps long perseverance wd. raise few more - no hybrids known amongst Compositæ

p. 167. Hybrid commoner in Polyspermous genera & rarer in Dichogamous. Doubtful in Ferns of genus Gymnogramma.

p 167 Nearly allied genera differ greatly in aptness to yield Hybrids. Few true generic crosses. Lychnis & Cucubalus & Herbert cases.

p 168 Fitness of union depends not on outward generic characters, but inward nature of procreative elements - two affinities, an outward systematic & inward sexual affinity

p. 169 Cultivation generally favourable to cross impregnation - Of all genera Calceolaria most ready. (Fuchsia also before mentioned)

p 170 "The essence of a species consists in the definite relation of its sexual powers to other species"

p 171. Pollen of one species will impregnate

others in a regularly graduated scale of facility - Sexual affinity does not follow systematic laws - n. langsdorfii will fructify several other species in above scale, but cannot be itself fructified by their pollen, though it can by others.
