Has published work with plates (for woodcuts) "de ovi mammalium et hominis &c &c." case seems well made out. "Nous avons ici une organization, passagère dans les oiseaux, persister chez les sauriens et les ophidiens pendent toute la duree de leur vie"

p. 277 embryo of snake in anterior part perfectly resembles that of lizard.

p 279. L' histoire du development des batraciens demontre d' une maniere irrecusable que la formation des branchies est un perfectionnement de l' organization des arcs branchiaux et des arcades vasculaires" (these letter seem the parts present in embryos.

p. 56 colour & femoral poses vary in all, & all the proportional sizes of the different parts vary exceedingly - a most curious table (p 87) of Lacerta muralis, taking head as standard, neck, trunk, anterior & posterior legs, 2nd toes of post. legs & tail all vary wonderfully in 14 specimens

This variation holds in 11 species; so proportions fail to distinguish species - hind legs varies least in length & serves in one case p. 66 as sole specific character - the occipital scales on head, however, vary very little afford good specific characters. Very good paper -

(This variation does not help selection; but it shows only that a character extremely good in another class of vertebrate, birds, is of no use in this family - We know generally that multiple parts offer no good character, as stamens -

This is good instance of part variable in individuals also variable in species; N.B this is tautology = Perhaps I have not been generally

cautious enough in selecting cases of variable parts to show possibility of selection the cases I want is videlicet the occipital scales to be variable in one of the above species of Lizards. These facts only serve to do away a priori improbability of variation. This must be attended to
