[110]

Jun 20' 1873/ White vars of common Snap-Dragon have narrow yellow-lip to entrance — White Pelargonium [illeg] purple stripes on 2 upper petals — White Primula Sinensis conspicuous green centre round tip of corolla— & white small creeping Phlox, two little purple stripes, corresponding to each division of the corolla & pointing to the tube.

All these looks shows nectar-marks very permanent, does it (Like bars on Pigeon wings & other spots on Birds) not indicate gained before colour of corolla? so more important?? White Petuni Petunia has branching dark lines in mouth of Corolla — White Rhododendron has yellow spots on upper side of corolla.—

Nectar-marks

over

[110v]

White Foxglove, beautiful purple dots on whole lower side of corolla;— in the ordinary form these are present & are surrounded by white spaces & thus made more conspicuous.— In double White Pink there is a trace of transverse yellowish-green marks across base of petal, corresponding to white transverse purple bar on many sp. of Dianthus.

White Pel Rhododendron & white Azalea of the Pontica breed — if I remember not so in white Indian Azalea— what are colour of floret—

(I find that only some of the white snap-dragons have yellow lips to flower)

N.B In Fraxinella the lower petal alone is destitute of nectar-guides.
