[111]

Jun 24th All Eliz. W. White Foxgloves have the spots, & spots in the red kind are darker than general tint. Several of Eliz. White Snap-dragon have yellow lip & this hardly darker than whole colour.— White D. Superbus, retain faint mark nectar guide— White Sweet William retain it in most conspicuous manner— A White Myosotis has yellow projections round tube of corolla.— Many of my cases may be accounted for by the nectar-guides being darker; but this hardly holds in Rhododendron & Snap-dragon. Say I doubt whether can be wholly accounted for on this latter principle.— (Phlox Drummondii which has dark crimson circle round tube of corolla, in white var. quite loses this, so it can be lost.) Spots on common Fox-gloves darker than in white var.) (There is var. of Petunia with tube of corolla white, [illeg] pink, & here nectar-guides obliterated) In normal Rhododendron the spots are darker than ground-colour.) (One of Eliz White Fox-glove perfectly white no spots)
