Sept. 20' 1869.—

Reseda odorata.

This spring I bedded out 4 plants separate & carefully protected with nets, & have now examined. One has produced a few pods, (of which many are small sized), far more pods than during previous years, & yet must be considered as very nearly sterile. Theotherplants are completely loaded with pods — every flower in earlier part of summer having produced its pods. — How curious this is. — I shd have stated that the first & semi-sterile pod plant is only sterile with own pollen; for I casually without care smeared 4 small branches (marking the branch & plant part of branch) with pollen from other plants & these all produced many fine Pods.—

(2

Reseda lutea. 2 plants were put under nets & carefully guarded, one of two was perfectly self-fertile — the other was semi sterile producing but a few pods — many of small size until the branches grew to top of net, whe against which they pressed & became curved, & these curved branches were alone loaded with pods — It is curious this individual variability in self-fertility in 2 such distinct sp. of same genus. —

I observed with the common mignonette that Hive-bees were attracted by odour as they alighted for some time on nets & tried to find entrance.—
