Does stigma protrude without a touch?? May 24th as far as I can see under net it never does.— I find that shorter anthers protrude by gently touching keel & they protrude just where stigma lies after explosion — so bees' body dusted with those from younger flower would rub stigma of old flower.—

When Bee causes explosion stigma hits back & the 4 long anthers likewise dust back so bee wd get pollen of these anthers all mixed from several flowers & would put it on stigma.— This depends on correctness of flowers not exploding without a touch.— Pollen matured very early as (important as showing no relation to fertilisation) & of longer & shorter anthers at same time; but certainly lower anthers can act, before explosion of pistil.—

May 23d. Broom 1863— Covered up branch; & this day fertilised 5 4 flowers with own pollen & p. from other bush. — If these set shows crowding & shade not too much.— Shorter anthers are mature earliest & whilst flower in bud & can hardly reach stigma — when keel depressed stigma comes out with spring & scatters pollen of oldest anthers — Would not pollen of short rather dust head of Bee & thus get on to old curled pistil; as well as old pollen from old anthers. —
