June 7th A number of Flowers were snapped off & prevented getting pollen from shorter stamens. White silk Nor. 5 flowers
White-silk & White wool fertilised hours afterwards (weather having been very hot) with pollen of long stamens - 5 fl.
Two White silks. do. fert with pollen of short stamens 5 fl.

Not one set, too late in season or rather flowers too old.
All these flowers so old & nearly withered & pollen so scanty results cannot be trusted

(a) These flowers had long been expanded under net, but had not spontaneously snapped off.—
June 9th I snapped off 4 or 5 flowers & pollen had stuck on all stigmas─; but in two pollen-tubes after 20˚ had not penetrated stigmas.─
